Monstersongs follows the journey of a child who opens a portal into the psyches of often misunderstood creatures. Through their songs, the monsters reclaim their own narrative, inviting the audience to explore the humanity that bind us all.
The text and music by Rob Rokicki is combined with artwork/projections by David O’Neill to bring this musical to life. For each monster, different art styles and music genres are explored. As such for each costume we referenced not only the archetypical monstrous appearance from pop culture for our characters, but also the music genre aesthetics they are linked to through their song. While their stories are an echo of everyday human flaws, we wanted to keep the monsters in the realm of fantasy as the kid, and the audience, gets to know them better. This fantasy is at times achieved through elements of glam rock and rockstars aesthetics and others through out-right fantastical elements, such as wings and the fabulous make-up designs of Melissa Zijsling.
